01What is it about?
Your Mastery Rank (MR) shows how much of Warframe you have experienced. You rank up by leveling new gear and completing the Star Chart. A higher rank unlocks stronger weapons and new features. There are fixed ranks up to 30, followed by Legendary Ranks.
The key terms in short:
- Mastery points
- The points you collect for your next rank. You get most of them by leveling new gear.
- Affinity
- The experience that ranks Warframes and weapons from 0 to 30.
- Rank-up test
- A short trial you must pass before you rank up. You always play it solo.
- Item rank
- Every Warframe and weapon has its own ranks from 0 to 30. Not the same as your Mastery Rank.
- Variant
- Prime, Vandal, Wraith, Prisma or Kuva versions of a weapon. They count as separate items and give their own points.
- Affinity Booster
- Doubles the affinity you earn for a while.
02What does a higher rank give you?
| Rank | What you unlock |
|---|---|
| MR 2 | Trading with other players (trades per day = your rank) |
| MR 3 | Faction Syndicates |
| MR 5 | Sorties, Kuva Siphons, Kuva Liches: create, decode and defeat them and Sisters of Parvos: Candidate, Hounds and Tenet weapons |
| MR 8 | Riven mods, all Relays, buying the Helminth Segment for the Helminth: unlock it, feed it, swap abilities |
| MR 10 | Extra mod configurations can be bought |
- Many weapons need a minimum rank. At MR 15 you can use almost every Market, Syndicate and clan research weapon.
- Every rank raises your daily Syndicate standing cap by 500.
- Every rank raises your Void Traces cap by 50, which helps with Void Relics: farming Prime parts.
- New, unranked gear gets a little more base mod capacity (see Modding basics: capacity, Endo, Forma and more).
03Where do the points come from?
| Source | Mastery points |
|---|---|
| Weapon per rank (up to 30) | 100, 3,000 in total |
| Warframe, companion, Archwing, K-Drive, Necramech per rank | 200, 6,000 in total |
Kuva, Tenet and Coda weapons, Paracesis | up to rank 40 with 5 Forma, 4,000 in total |
| Necramech with 5 Forma | up to rank 40, 8,000 in total |
| First win at a Junction (Specter duel) | 1,000 |
| Railjack and Drifter Intrinsics rank | 1,500 per rank |
| Clearing a Star Chart node for the first time | a fixed amount per node |
Kitguns, Zaws and Amps only give points after you rank them to 30, gild them at their vendor and then level them again.
04How many points do you need?
Each rank needs a total of 2,500 × rank² points. Extra points are not lost, they count towards the next rank.
| Rank | Total points |
|---|---|
| MR 5 | 62,500 |
| MR 10 | 250,000 |
| MR 15 | 562,500 |
| MR 20 | 1,000,000 |
| MR 30 | 2,250,000 |
05The rank-up tests
- 01
Earn enough points
As soon as the bar is full, the game tells you that you can rank up.
- 02
Start the test
Hover over your profile picture in the top left and choose “Rank Up” there. You can also take the test later.
- 03
Play it solo
Tests are always solo. The first ones are simple fights with your primary, secondary and melee weapon. Later ones add parkour, stealth and defense.
- If you fail, you can try again right away.
- After passing a test you have to wait 23 hours before the next one.
- You can replay old tests at Cephalon Simaris in any Relay.
06Level faster: the best tips
- Know how affinity is split: weapon kills give half to the weapon and half to your Warframe. Ability kills go fully to the Warframe.
- Play in a squad: when a teammate within 50 meters kills an enemy, you get affinity too. 25% of it goes to your Warframe, the rest is split among your equipped weapons.
- Only bring gear you are leveling: rank 30 weapons still soak up shared affinity. Only equip what should grow.
- Affinity Booster: doubles affinity. You sometimes get one free from Sorties and the Archon Hunt, and 3 days cost 40 platinum in the Market.
Smeeta Kavat: its “Charm” precept can give you triple affinity for a while.
| Place | Planet | Mission | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Void Fissures | everywhere | varies | Many strong enemies, and you open relics on the side |
| Adaro | Sedna | Exterminate | Lots of affinity from stealth kills |
| Elara | Jupiter | Survival | Endless waves, great in a squad |
| Plains of Eidolon | Earth | Open world | Good for early ranks |
Frequently asked questions
I am new: what should I level first?
Everything you already own or can build cheaply. Each new weapon gives 3,000 points, each Warframe 6,000. The early ranks go by very quickly this way.
Should I sell weapons after rank 30?
You can. You keep the points. But hold on to weapons you like or need for other blueprints.
How long does it take to reach MR 30?
That depends a lot on how much you play. You need 2.25 million points in total, which means a lot of Warframes and weapons. Note: the 23-hour wait only applies after a passed test.
What comes after MR 30?
Then come the Legendary Ranks. Each one needs another 147,500 points.
